My Hitachi is hands-down the vibratingest thing in my toy collection. I mentioned it last night at dinner (can’t remember why…) and a friend said, “Oh, the Magic Wand? Is that thing any good?” I told him that it would vibrate his face off, which I still feel is a very accurate description. My Hitachi is my if-all-else-fails toy. The orgasms I have with it aren’t as satisfying as those I have with a weaker vibe, but if I need to get off and nothing else is working the Hitachi is a sure thing.
In the past, what made it difficult for me to really love the Hitachi was the vibrating head. The Hitachi is legitimately a body massager and not a sex toy, so it has a vinyl head that isn’t really meant to be put in places that would get bodily fluids on it. I can’t sterilize it, and every time I want to wash it I have to march the whole forearm-sized toy down the hall, past my housemate’s room, to the bathroom sink. I have also been unhappy with the pebbly texture as it makes my skin itchy after extended use, and with the uniform roundness. It’s difficult to vary the area of stimulation when the toy is so heavy and the head is like a pebbly pool ball.
I can’t even tell you how happy I was when PinkCherry.com sent me the Vixen Off With Your Head to review. Smooth, sterilizable silicone with interesting bumps and ridges that I can pull off the Hitachi when it’s cleaning time? Fuck yeah!
What it is:
Off With Your Head (OWYH from now on) is a head replacement for the Hitachi Magic Wand. It is 100% silicone, and is deliciously soft and squishy. It has three horizontal ridges running across one side, and one vertical ridge running along the other. At the bottom of the ridge is a little “tongue” that sticks out for pinpoint stimulation.
Because the OWYH is silicone, good news! You can boil it, bleach it, run it through the dishwasher, or just use warm water and soap to get it nice and clean. Any of the first three methods should get it clean enough to share, so the days when you had an excuse to hog your Hitachi are over. The cap comes off with only a little effort, so there’s no need to take the whole Hitachi, cord and all, to the bathroom.
Mine came in a gorgeous light teal color with a very, very slight shimmer to it. It arrived in a plastic canister with removable plastic endcaps.
Installation:
The Off With Your Head isn’t the kind of product you can use right out of the canister– there’s a moderate amount of assembly required.
First, the old cap must be removed. Vixen’s included instructions suggested a combination turning and pulling motion. Using this method I actually managed to unscrew the head (the part under the cap) and temporarily break my poor Hitachi. I would personally recommend a combination pulling and rocking motion, because the head is somewhat difficult to get back on properly.
Just in case you have managed to unscrew the head of your Hitachi, you need to be very careful in putting it back on. If you look inside the neck, there is a teardrop-shaped hole at the bottom. The free end of the spring sticking out of the head you just unscrewed needs to fit into that hole, so line it up before you turn the head to screw it back on. You will know it’s lined up properly when you don’t need to push down very hard to start screwing it on. If it is not lined up, and you do screw it back on and then turn the Hitachi on, you will hear an extremely loud, extremely unpleasant grinding noise and possibly damage the spring. Don’t do it.
Anyway, after I managed to fix that problem and then pry the old head off, I needed a break. That was a lot of work. I was very pleased to find that the final step in installation was quite easy: push the new head on. Another tip: be sure to push the new head on all the way, otherwise your Hitachi will make more noise than it already does.
Actual performance:
I have been eagerly testing the OWYH. I experienced procrastination-through-masturbation moments like “Should I sit down and write the review now? Hmm, maybe I had better go test it one more time to be sure…”
Yes, the OWYH does dampen the Hitachi’s vibrations ever so slightly. But unless you’re the kind of super-steely-clitted woman who needs every last ounce of vibrate-y power, I can’t see how it would lessen your Hitachi experience any. For me, that slight dampening effect has only improved my sessions with my Hitachi. It’s even still a little strong for me.
I thoroughly tested each of the textured sides, a non-textured side, and the top. The side with the three horizontal ridges was great for a warm-up; I liked holding it so that my clit was between two of the ridges, or pulling it up along my vulva for what felt like waves of pleasure. Of course I used plenty of lube for that. The non-textured sides might be an even better warm-up for some as they are where the vibration feels weakest, but the smooth silicone feels delightful once lubed up. The top was where the vibrations were strongest, and I felt that they were too strong for me. Plus, holding the Hitachi at the angle where I can use the top is awkward and tiring.
My favorite “feature” by far was the ridge side. The most minute tilt in my wrist brought huge changes in sensation. I was able to bring the vibration to where I need it the most (my clit, inner labia, and the space in between) without applying it anywhere else. I felt like the little tongue-like protrusion was a bit too intense so I didn’t make much use of it.
With the old, vinyl head, I was always afraid to use the Hitachi during my period for fear of staining it with a stray bit of blood. This was unfortunate because the first days of my periods are always very painful, and are improved greatly by a quick orgasm or two. I also tend to need more stimulation than usual to help me ignore the pain. Having an easily cleanable, sterilizable silicone head means that I can use my Hitachi when it gives me the biggest benefit.
The bottom line:
It is my opinion that the Off With Your Head attachment for the Hitachi Magic Wand is a fabulous addition to any Hitachi owner’s toybox. I have heard some veteran Hitachi users complain that they didn’t like the way that the OWYH changed their dear, long-time friend, but my experiences with my Hitachi have done nothing but improve since proclaiming, “Off with your head!”
Thank you, thank you, thank you, PinkCherry.com, for sending me the Off With Your Head attachment.

Have you ever used the Wahl 7 Way vibe? I purchased it from Good Vibrations about 16 yrs ago. It has 2 speeds and 7 attachments of slightly different shapes and sizes. This baby has never failed me. GV use to sell an attachment for male use (kind of cup-like) but my husband never liked it much. I recently saw it on Amazon for about $17.
Just my 2 cents.
P.S. Love your blog!
@Beth
Thanks! The Wahl is definitely high on my wishlist, and as it happens to be so cheap there is a high probability that it will make its way into my toybox in the next month or two.
Oooh. Want!
xx Dee
Great review. I keep going back and forth on this, since I don’t really use my Hitachi. I love the color.
